Patient education is extremely important to Dr. Rachel Borson. She seeks to ensure that her patients completely understand both their illness and their choices relating to its treatment. By empowering her patients with information, an active partnership develops regarding treatment decisions. Dr. Borson believes in the power of clinical research to advance the care of people with cancer. She directs the conduct of numerous research studies open to enrollment at the Institute. With her caring, upbeat personality, Dr. Borson relates well to her patients and their loved ones.

Dr. Borson earned her medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She completed her internship and residency in Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, Mass., where she served an additional year as chief/senior resident. She completed clinical and research fellowships in hematology and medical oncology at Beth Israel Hospital at Harvard University, Boston, Mass. She served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School before relocating to St. Louis in 1992, where she was appointed Assistant Professor in the Bone Marrow Transplantation and Stem Cell Biology Division at Washington University. She joined the Mercy Clinic St. Louis Cancer and Breast Institute as a founding member in 1998, after practicing with the group from 1995 -1998.

Dr. Borson has written numerous medical oncology and hematology articles for professional journals. She is certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology and is a member of Cancer and Leukemia Group B, American Society of Hematology, and the American Society for Clinical Oncology. Dr. Borson also serves on the Medical Advisory Board for The Wellness Community and was awarded the Margery Deby Award for Outstanding Achievement in Oncology.

Dr. Borson enjoys cooking, reading, biking, and traveling. She is the parent of two teenagers who keep her very active outside of the office.
